Each Campaign has Campaign Members. Campaign Members must exist in Salesforce as Contacts before you can connect them to the Campaign.
Campaign Membership is used to track the individual's progress through the Campaign itself. We can track RSVP statuses, membership statuses, dates to follow up, etc. We can also see the different Campaigns each Contact has been involved in, through the related list on the Contact record.
